Leading our team, Andrew is a graduate of Bradford University having completed a BA (Hons) in Community Studies (Leisure & Recreation). He is also currently completing an MBA course at Keele University.
Andrew’s career launched in 1994 working for Teignbridge District Council before moving for a more senior role to Devon County Council. Both posts focused on sport, leisure and youth work. At Devon County Council his role included developing an innovative outdoor pursuit’s based youth empowerment project. There he discovered his talent for fundraising and project-based work successfully securing his first major grant, £30,000 to fund one of the Royal Yachting Associations’ first mobile Topper dingy fleets.
Andrew is a full member of both the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity and the Institute of Fundraising.
1997
In 1997 Andrew moved to work a more senior role for Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council where he spent several years in a leisure development function delivering a range of community sports development and facility development projects. This included developing the new £7.25m Pingles Leisure Centre where he played a key role in the successful Lottery bid preparation team.
2001
2001 saw Andrew move to the first of a number of strategic management positions within Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He worked there for over 16 years in a range of roles, Starting off using his funding expertise as Funding Officer and progressing to Sports Development Manager through to five years spent as the General Manager for the Sport and Leisure Service with specific responsibility for policy and strategy, sports development and community sports facilities.
2007
Andrew’s work is heavily influenced by his passion for innovation and creating opportunities for people to take part in sport. Central to this was five years leading the unique Municipal Journal 2007 award-winning Closing the Gap Programme. This later led to his creating Stoke-on-Trent’s StreetGames programme, which soon became one of the UK's largest and most successful initiatives of its kind and resulted in his receipt of StreetGames prestigious Outstanding Contribution to Doorstep Sport award in 2016.
2016
A crucial aspect of Andrew’s work is his ability to synthesise complex concepts into coherent, engaging and persuasive text. This valuable skill has seen him lead the delivery of over £36.5m to support small community-based revenue projects and major multi-million-pound schemes. Andrew has also gained experience preparing successful bids to host prestigious events such as the UK Corporate Games and secure major awards such as Stoke-on-Trent’s designation as European City of Sport in 2016 and Milton Keynes designation for 2020.
